Child Ghosts

Sep 23, 2015 by Haunted Manhattan

NYC eventsLong ago, we didn’t have the medical care we do these days and sometimes the mortality rate for children was on the low side.  Couple that with parents that aren’t meant to take care of children, and we get the inevitability of the ghosts of children.  More often than not, these ghosts are some of the most frightening encounters people have recorded, and they’re more than willing to share their experiences.

  1. Orphanage in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania – Near another super haunted location, the Jennie Wade House, this orphanage was located in what is now the Soldier’s National Museum. Guests of this museum have reported strange laughter, icy hands touching them, the voices of children, and movement of tours.  According to local experts, many of the orphans also sought refuge inside the Jenny Wade house and their spirits have also migrated there as well.
  2. Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, Alabama – Sometimes referred to as the Dead Children’s Cemetery, this peaceful section of the cemetery is also notably the most terrifying for visitors. The occurrences of swings moving, giggles, and orbs of light occur usually between the hours of 10P.M. and 3 A.M.
  3. The Beeson Mansion in Niles, Michigan – When a young mother lost her child far too soon, she couldn’t bear to be without him. His crypt was directly across the street from her home, and every night she would return to his it to hold his remains, and occasionally even re-diaper him.  Reports say that the child can be heard crying for his mother.
  4. Hayward Plunge in Hayward, California – This story doesn’t involve a great deal of details, but supposedly a swim coach in the 60s murdered his team by the creek next door to this indoor pool complex. The origin of the story is often questioned as history doesn’t necessarily agree with this story, but visitors of the parks feel cold spots, witness mini rock slides, and hear the voices of the children.
  5. Metz Elementary School in Austin, Texas – Built in 1916, the school was later deemed too small for its purposes. While there are no reports of actual recorded deaths on school grounds, when it came time for the building to be demolished, construction workers experience some pretty strange phenomena.  Reportedly, the heard the laughter of children, dysfunction of their tools, and even a wall collapse.  After a priest was brought in to bless the building, it is said that the action calmed down quite a bit.

While the death of a child is never a favorable topic, these deaths did exist and some disgruntled or confused spirits are left behind.  It is said that many ghosts of children do not understand that they have died, they’re scared to move on, or they have an unfinished task to attend to, and this is why they linger in this realm.  For more people that just can’t seem to move on, check out our website for information on any one of our tours through Manhattan’s most popular neighborhoods.
