Literature is filled with stories about love. Most of these stories feature happy women and men living out their lives together: married, with children and happily ever after. There are, however, the stories of heartbreak and tragedy; the stories that last beyond a lifetime. With Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching we wanted to share some of the everlasting love stories that will haunt you.
- The Gray Man – In Pawley’s Island, SC lore exists a story of a man known to locals as The Gray Man. This man is said to have been returning from the war to marry his lifetime sweetheart, when a storm surge rushed the beach and he was knocked from his horse, sustaining a broken neck and dying there in the surf. Two nights later, when his love was walking the beach, he appeared to her in an attempt to warn her away from the coast due to a hurricane’s approach. Since then, locals say he appears to warn against hurricane surges.
- The Bellamy Bridge – In Mariana, FL a legend of a tragic love story has evolved from what may be a true story. The legend holds that a young woman named Elizabeth was to be married to a man named Samuel, and their love knew no boundaries. On the night of their wedding, Elizabeth’s wedding dress caught on fire, and she was very badly burned. She didn’t make it, and was buried in the family cemetery. The story of their tragic love ends, however, that her grave couldn’t smother the love she had for her husband and she wanders the swamps surrounding the Bellamy Bridge
- Emily’s Bridge – In Stowe, Vermont, there is more to the area than skiing. Stowe is also home to Emily’s Bridge; a bridge haunted by the ghost of a woman jilted by the love of her life on her wedding day. Though the manner in which she died is deeply argued upon, her spirit is said to haunt the bridge and has been seen by many a local and tourist alike. Whether she was involved in a tragic stagecoach accident or she committed suicide using the very rafters of the bridge to hang herself, her love has lasted lifetimes.
