Paranormal Happenings on the Silver Screen

ghost tours nycThere have been thousands of movies made about unsuspecting and innocent people being haunted, cursed, and otherwise tortured by paranormal activity, but most of those films wrap without any evidence of ghostly activity. However, what happens when the horror in the movies becomes real and begins to effect the set, actors, and prop departments? There are many all-too-real haunting stories that have plagued Hollywood for decades. What’s the secret behind some of your favorite movies?

Poltergeist – One would be remiss in talking about curses of the silver screen and NOT mentioning Poltergeist. It is widely known that the props department employed the use of real skeletons during the swimming pool scene, and it is suspected that this action cursed the movie, and its actors. The young starlet with a bright future, Dominique Dunne, was murdered shortly after filming wrapped. This was not the only untimely death that happened within the cast either. The beautiful toe-headed actress that portrayed Carol-Anne, Heather O’Rourke, passed away not long after the first movie. Other mishaps plagued the set as well, during the clown scene, the little boy was actually choked.

The Possession – Obviously, the title of this film says it all. However, what was meant to be a fictional account of a possession, turned out to be much more than fiction. Reports from the sets account strange happenings such as lights exploding and strong, swift, and cold breezes passing through the closed set. The weirdest thing was the fire that consumed the trailer that held the props department’s cache. The fire went undetected and razed the structure, completely.

The Omen – Making a movie about the antichrist should come with fair warning that bad stuff is going to go down on the set. The craziness that ensued during the making of this film went beyond what one may expect. First, the son of the lead passed away from suicide, unexpectedly. Then, both the scriptwriter and the director’s planes were struck by lightning, within eight hours of each other.

The Conjuring – This was a film based on real-life events, in particular, the haunting of one family. The family visited the set quite often, but the matriarch of the family refused to be present on the set, in which they were filming. During one visit, the woman stated that there was a sinister presence in her Atlanta home. While this was happening, the family became engulfed by a particularly strong wind that was blowing nothing else around them. Actors in the film refused to take the script home with them, claiming it made them anxious and the director recounts one tale of his dog barking and growling at something he could not see.

The Amityville Horror – One of the best known haunted house stories in America, The Amityville Horror is based on a true story of a family that was plagued by a vicious haunting upon moving into an idyllic and beautiful house. The set was plagued by ghostly activity, which included the cast and crew members waking up suddenly at 315AM, the time at which the Amityville murders took place.

Whether you’re a believer or not, these stories of true life hauntings and curses would give even the toughest critic pause. For more ghostly action and a great deal of haunting history, check out our website for our tour information!
