To my dear patrons,
Welcome to Haunted Manhattan. Allow me to introduce myself- I am your Concierge. If you are looking for amusing activities in the West Village, you’ve come to the right person. I would be happy to find you a hotel where you can rest in peace. Consider, for example, the Jane Hotel at the corner of West Street and Jane Street. This delightful, historic building was once a rest home for sailors. Among the men who stayed there were those who had survived the sinking of the Titanic. Wracked with survivor’s guilt, some of these sailors still linger in the halls of the Jane, unable to move into the afterlife and face those they left behind in the frozen waters.
Should you already have arranged your lodgings in the city, perhaps you might be interested in a night at the theatre? At present, the Theater: Village festival features the work of four major companies in the neighborhood: the Rattlestick, the New Ohio, the Axis Theatre (currently presenting a musical about the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire of 1911, which you can hear more about from Professor Mortimer on the Greenwich Village tour), and last but not least, the Cherry Lane Theatre. If you attend a performance at the Cherry Lane, be sure to send the ghost of Kim Stanley my regards. What a goddess she was.
And there’s also plenty of after-hours after-life activity. Just stop by One If By Land, Two If By Sea, the famed Gotham watering hole where the Happy Hour is synonymous with the Witching Hour.
I will begin giving tours of the neighborhood this week, so if you would like to know more than this brief memo describes, please consider attending.
Very truly yours,
The Concierge
