These days, the silver screen is packed with films about ghosts, goblins, and all sorts of other horrifying creatures. Name a monster and there is most like a movie about including a killer car tire or a Thanksgiving turkey. However, the best horror movies are the ones that include a basis of truth; the movies that include evidence of real life hauntings and their impact on the families that lived through it. Hollywood has cranked out a number of hits over the years, but some remain fresh in the minds of movies aficionados everywhere.
- The Amityville Horror – Based on true events that took place in a New York town over the course of 28 days. A family bought a new house, their dream house, and were plagued by eerie events. The house was said to be the previous sight of a mass murder, and for that reason, the people that purchased the house were subject to many a horrific event.
- Psycho – Famous for its iconic shower scene, this horrifying tale was all too true. A murderer, who was later found insane, wreaked all sorts of havoc digging up graves and murdering women that reminded him of his mother. Thought to be a source of evil, the house and motel serves as an excellent backdrop for terrifying activity and mayhem.
- The Conjuring – With inspiration drawn from a haunted Rhode Island farmhouse, this film was a popular one in 2013. Using a family tortured by paranormal events in the farmhouse, the story takes viewers on a non-stop horror filled ride as paranormal experts are called in to check things out. The true story comes from two investigators, fascinated with the paranormal, who became obsessed with the house and all of the activity therein.
- The Shining – Not many people realize that the inspiration for this film, the book by Stephen King, came from a very real story involving a family that spent some time at a nearly vacant hotel and became taken over by the strange happenings. The movie features a young Jack Nicholson being turned into a vicious savage as the empty hotel slowly drives him crazy. The movie took some creative license, and word has it that King was not entirely thrilled with its direction. However, it was hugely popular among the horror fans and is derived from truth as well.
- The Haunting in Connecticut – Based on a real life couple that lived in a haunted funeral home, this film features a family that moves into a new home to help their son who is in poor health. Once they settle in, they quickly discover that the former mortuary’s current inhabitants aren’t exactly welcoming. The true story is another featuring supernatural power couple, Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were called in to check out the mysterious happenings.
