We’ve all driven through sleepy little American towns that haven’t been updated, and it looks as though time has forgotten all about them. However, there is another set of towns across the American countryside where time has actually stopped moving, and no one lives within the town limits anymore. Commonly known as a ghost town, these forgotten areas are desolate and abandoned, and have allowed nature to take its course.
- Bodie, California – In the late 1800’s, this ghost town was booming with people, saloons, and a thriving gold boom. However, nowadays, it is abandoned. Located about 75 miles from the popular Lake Tahoe vacation destination, this town still has stores that are fully stocked with no one to run them.
- Santa Claus, Arizona – Once, this town was set up as a Christmas destination, chock full of hotels and dining spots that were Christmas themed. There was even a chance to meet Santa Claus himself, but the town has been for sale since the early 80’s. A good stopping point, this town will display all the markers of your common ghost town; abandoned buildings, vandalism, and a train that no longer runs.
- Cahawba, Alabama – A popular town in the Antebellum South, Cahawba used to be the capital of the fair state of Alabama. However, intense flooding took over the town and has left it in ruins. Some of the remaining buildings are now controlled by the Alabama government, but the majority of the town is in crumbling disrepair.
- Kennecott, Alaska – Set deep at the end of a dirt road, inside a state park, this town was supposed to be a mill town, but ended up being too far out in the wilderness for it to take off. Since it’s inevitable shut down, the old buildings remain, but only a tour guide can show you the best sites.
- North Brother Island, New York – Built to sequester patient’s suffering from small pox and typhoid, this 20-acre island formerly housed a hospital that saw the famous patient, Typhoid Mary. Later used for a veterans hospital, and a rehab facility, the late 60’s saw the death of this island’s facilities. Currently inaccessible, this island is said to be potentially reopening for public viewing in this year.
