As America celebrates our independence, there are photos of the White House are being shown all over the news channels as this famous abode braces itself to kick off the 4th of July celebration. Famously known for being the home that houses the nation’s President, the White House has another claim to fame as well. President Harry Truman told his wife, in a letter, that the house was “sure as shootin’, haunted.”
For as long as the White House has housed the Presidents, there have been rumors of hauntings. The first of these ghosts is reportedly the seventh President Andrew Jackson. Lincoln’s wife Mary Todd Lincoln reportedly heard the president cursing heartily, and others have corroborated these reports, while others simply report hearing his laughter.
The most famous of the ghost stories centers around President Lincoln as well. The man himself has been reportedly sighted in what is known as The Lincoln Bedroom, by many of the presidents and their first ladies. He seems to be a benevolent spirit, simply roaming about in his coat and top hat and making general appearances, although he did cause a fainting spell in Queen Wilhemina of the Netherlands. There haven’t been any documented sightings in recent years, but he could just be keeping a low profile.
Other hauntings in this famous domicile include President Lincoln’s son, Willie, who died of typhoid fever in the White House. He also seems to mean no harm, and was said to have chatted briefly with Lynda Bird Johnson. He also hasn’t been seen since the 1980s, much like his father.
Perhaps one of the most interesting hauntings involves another victim of Booth’s assassination of Lincoln. A woman named Anna Surratt’s mother was indicted and hanged for her part in the assassination, but Surratt famously pleaded with the President to pardon her mother. These days, reports say her ghost is still seen pleading at the White House doors, pounding her fists.
